While System Restore might work to fix this problem, it is not the method I'm recommending to use here.

I have this problem on my wife's machine, and when I insert the Windows 7 CD, I chose command prompt and typed "regedit" and it brought up the registry editor.

The strings above are the way they should be. Am I missing an extra step? Something about loading hives, etc.? Is my registry editor ran from the command prompt from the Windows 7 CD displaying the correct registry to fix? Thanks!

<a href="#comment-3068" rel="nofollow">@Adam Andrews </a>

Andrew you are genius man - spent the entire work trying to start my Windows FIREWALL. I even called McAfee Technical Support who gave me some wff executable which was rejected and removed by their own McAfee - well it didn't help.

Then I stumbled on this post and I didn't even have to recreate the BFE service entry in the registry like what the admin suggested. Just straight created the “NT Service\BFE” account because I was getting a 'denied' error. Genius Andrew, God bless you man!

I'm dubious of the many odd remedies to fix these poorly designed dv series computers. It seems you can find hundreds of one-off solutions, but I'll sure try this next chance I have.

The problem can be solved by jumper-ing the white cable with the center post (unsoldered) on back of jack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In5JoDVlZ0Y seems janky but can be done properly and is a confirmed fix.
