I'm having installations problems with MSE right now in fact. I think this one has to do with a messed-up installation of Windows 7 though. Have not been able to find a solution yet.

There are few other things that needs to be addressed and that are the problems and error people are getting by using Microsoft Security Essentials during installation and updation. Please allow me to share with the users, perhaps this can help someone visit this post.

In theory you could run both if you turned off the real-time scanning for one of them. Generally, you can't run two AVs because they fight with each other and you end up with a seized-up machine or at best you miss identifying problems. There are some AVs that can live in harmony but not many, for example I do run PREVX along with Avira here on two of my machines.

Another way to do the belt-and-braces approach is to run one real-time scanner and then have another on-demand scanner that you run on a regular basis. Currently I favour a program called Hitman Pro for this. It's not a free program but I think it would make a very good complement to MSE.

I hpe this helps. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance

Is it possible to run both Avira and MSE on the same machine at the same time?

Or would that cause problems?

Thanks for any help!

I was mentioning to a colleague this morning how difficult it is for me to get my head around the idea that a 10-year old product (Windows XP) that has had weekly security updates and 3 service packs is still insecure but that the same company can build a good Anti-virus program.

Avast is obviously quite a good product as well. I would be interested to know what advantage you see with it over MSE or is your thinking mainly based on experience with Avast.

One thing I notice about MSE is that Microsoft can't resist tinkering with other parts of your computer. When you install MSE it turns on Automatic Updates and leaves this turned on even if you uninstall it.

I have done some testing with MSE, Avira and Avast! myself. Personally I still lean towards Avast! I'm not even sure what to think about MSE finding "infections" in some of MSs' own files.
